Swansea are dancing with danger. On the brink of relegation, Paul Clement’s side are just keeping their heads above Championship water. If they are dumped in to the second tier, their star players will quickly depart. In fairness, even if they survive, there’s a chance of that happening. Everton have been strongly linked to Gylfi Sigurdsson. The playmaker is a major reason that Swansea aren’t already relegated. Today we’re asking two fans of the Toffees: ‘Sigurdsson to Everton: Should Koeman sign the playmaker?’
Sigurdsson to Everton: Koeman needs to sign him
By ‘James V.’
Swansea have been god awful at times this season. 69 goals conceded tells its own story. While being the worst defence in the league is punishment enough, only 40 goals scored in 35 matches shows they’re terrible at both ends. Interestingly, Gylfi Sigurdsson has been involved in over half of those goals. Nine goals from midfield is not a bad return, but on top of that, the Icelandic genius has twelve assists to his name.
Tom Davies has been a revelation this season. A much needed injection of youth. His two goals and three assists in 21 games shows promise. While Barkley still gives the impression that he could do more. 8 assists and 4 goals is a decent tally but you’d expect double digits on at least one front at this stage. Both players are still developing and could learn a lot from the more experienced, Sigurdsson.
We have defensively minded midfielders, but could do with another player that is able to create chances. Sigurdsson’s set pieces alone are worth a few million. Baines’ three assists this season shows there is room for another dead ball specialist. Lukaku would thrive on working with Sigurdsson, while Bolasie’s return would add another angle to the attack. At 27, Sigurdsson is about to reach his prime years. Hopefully he’ll enjoy those in a blue shirt.
Sigurdsson to Everton: Koeman should look elsewhere
By ‘Sarah R.’
Is Sigurdsson a better option than Barkley? It could prove difficult to find space for both of them in the team. Add Davies in to the mix, and my preference would be to focus on what we have. An injection of pace is what’s required now. Our midfield is too slow and is easily exposed against decent sides. The same applies to our centre backs.
Koeman has a crucial summer window ahead. Keeping Lukaku is critical, but there is a chance we’ll have to replace him. Bolasie returning will be like the proverbial new signing. However, I’d prefer if we could get reliable attacking wingers in place and a centre back to replace Jagielka. There isn’t an endless amount of money, so Koeman will need to be selective.
I like Sigurdsson. He has been impressive this season. Yet this could be a flash in the pan. He didn’t make the grade at Spurs. While you have to wonder why a ‘bigger club’ hasn’t already come in for him. His stats, while impressive, don’t differ too much from what we have. I’d focus our attention elsewhere.
What do you think? Would Sigurdsson to Everton be a match made in heaven or another underwhelming blue experience? Vote below:
