Ederson V Schmeichel: Which goalkeeper should Guardiola target?

Pep Guardiola currently has three decent goalkeepers on the books at Man City.  Unfortunately ‘decent’ simply isn’t good enough. City are stumbling toward the Premier League finish line. They’re likely to cross it in third or fourth position. They’re also likely to have a new number 1 between the sticks come August. The two keepers heavily linked with a move to the Etihad are Ederson and Kasper Schmeichel. We’re asking two Man City fans the question today ‘Ederson V Schmeichel: Who should Guardiola target?’

Ederson V Schmeichel: Pep should sign Ederson

By ‘Dan L’

Firstly, let’s not reminisce about Joe Hart. He was a decent servant but too prone to error. Furthermore, Torino have conceded an incredible 63 goals this season, the highest by some distance of the top 10 clubs in Serie A. I like Claudio Bravo’s shot stopping ability, but he gives the crowd the chills when coming to claim a high ball. Signed for his ‘football ability’, he’s simply made too many errors. Caballero, on the other hand is more solid, but nothing exceptional. A new keeper is needed, badly.

Ederson fits the bill. The Benfica goalkeeper has a stunning first season at the Estadio de Luz. Julio Cesar has been looking on from the bench for some time as his Brazilian counterpart excels for the club looking to secure their fourth consecutive domestic title. Ederson has shown maturity beyond his young years. In 25 league appearances, he has kept 15 clean sheets.

Champions League football was also added to Ederson’s C.V this year. 3 clean sheets in 7 games plus an average of 3.29 saves per game was an impressive introduction. He will only get better. Why sign another keeper in his mid thirties? Benfica is a selling club so will be delighted to cash in. His release clause is 45 million euro but he would be available for less. Guardiola has to take some chances this summer. Buying established, experienced goalkeepers does not guarantee success. Let’s sign a stopper who could be the world’s greatest goalie in a few years.

Ederson V Schmeichel: The solution is Schmeichel

By ‘Simon Q.’

The marathon running, Kante. Speed demon, Vardy. The genius, Mahrez. The narrative of Leicester’s miracle success has been well documented. One key factor often overlooked was the goalkeeper. Schmeichel was immense. 15 clean sheets in 38 league appearances. An ever present on their march to the title. Less than one goal conceded per game.

This season has been a challenge for the club. Schmeichel has maintained a high performance level, though. 7 clean sheets in 25 games is not a bad return for a club that was in freefall until recently. He’s also been extremely busy between the sticks averaging 3.32 saves per game. Schmeichel also proved himself on the European stage. Four clean sheets in seven games was impressive. On average he had 4.25 saves per every goal conceded. That’s one of the highest stats around.

Liverpool are also keen on the Danish stopper. Leicester no longer have European football to keep their stars happy. Let’s take advantage. Schmeichel is surely now ready to move to the next level. For good measure, we can even ship Hart off to Liverpool. Bravo and Cabellero’s reputations are ruined. We could perhaps retain the latter as back up. It doesn’t matter how many attacking talents Pep signs in the summer if there isn’t a new goalkeeper. That stopper should be Kasper Schmeichel.

What do you think Guardiola should do this summer? Should he try to sign Ederson from Benfica or Schmeichel from Leicester? Let us know by voting in the poll below.
