Benfica have brought their reputation as a selling club to a whole new level by transfer listing their ballboys. The Portuguese champions have announced that all of the 63 ballboys on their books are up for sale. Benfica have denied that this is the latest money-making move to clear their debt but instead are claiming that they’re selling their ballboys to “give the new youngsters a chance”
A source within the club said:
“The media will suggest we are transfer listing our ballboys to raise more funds but we have many youngsters from Brazil and Serbia ready to make the step up on match day. These new lads might never make an appearance in red so this gives them a shot at experiencing a big game at Estadio de Luz”
Benfica regularly make millions in the transfer window when they sell their best and even mediocre players. Di Maria, David Luiz and Matic are just three stars of the game that recently played for the Eagles. The ballboys apparently are on sale at two different levels. The 10,000 euro silver package will get you a ballboy with at least 10 games experience. While the gold package of 50,000 euro gives you a ballboy with at least 20 games experience including 5 Champions League matches. This European experience might be in short supply soon as the Lisbon club crashed out of the elite competition this year with 0 points in the group stage. Transfer listing their ballboys seems like drastic action but the club feel the time is right. Rio Ave have apparently already put a 5,000 euro bid in for 19 year old ball boy, Bruno Silva.
