The retired defender Kolo Toure, has come out of retirement to sign again for Liverpool. The 36-year-old is no longer, or perhaps never was, in peak physical condition but will go straight in to the starting line-up. Toure accepted the offer after days of pleading by Jurgen Klopp:
“I played 8 times for Celtic last season before hanging up the boots in the summer. I haven’t really kicked a ball since then but Jurgen begged me to return. My heart went out to him. They’ve just spent 75 million on a defender but let’s be honest, the team can’t defend to save their lives. I watched the West Brom performance and it was car crash stuff. Matip needs a big hug and I’m the man to give it. They’re just so helpless and pathetic”.
Jurgen Klopp believes Toure is just what Liverpool need at this stage of the season. In between making various making various excuses on why the club have been so inconsistent, he said:
“Between the dodgy TV cameramen putting off my players with their action shots, to the hypnotic blue and white stripes of the West Brom jersey, my players, and in particular my defenders, were vulnerable. Suddenly West Brom have scored 3 goals in the first half at Anfield and you go ‘Boom!’. I met Kolo at an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet over the weekend. While he was waiting for the chicken spring roll tray to be restocked, I offered him the chance to return. After a few more ribs, he agreed”.
Pundits are suggesting that this apparently desperate move by the Liverpool coach will undermine players like Lovren, Matip and even Van Dijk. Klopp calmly responded “how can you undermine something that is already 100% undermined?”
