Worrying results from a survey of younger Manchester United fans born since 1990 showed up that only 78% of fans couldn’t identify who Eric Cantona was and fewer could say what position he played in. In what some serious fans called a ‘disgrace’ fans wondered who ‘the fat hairy lad’ was and claimed there would be no way someone as ‘visibly as unfit as that’ could make it into the current side. Club legend Cantona was unreachable for comment but such a sseverance from the club’s glorious recent history can only be seen as a shocking result of the recent lack of success.
In other parts of the survey, 16% of fans born after 1999 believed league football was invented by sky sports, Manchester United and Liverpool are the only UK clubs to ever win the European cup, according to 8% of under 18 year olds, England have won the World Cup 3 times , according to 4% of fans and 2% think the English team is the number 1 in the world.
More worryingly for United fans, a whopping 81% couldn’t identify Lee Sharpe, 72% couldn’t say who Denis Irwin or Dennis Law were and 68% thought George Best was from Manchester.
Only 4% said Roy Keane would get into the current side. 41% said Beckham would feature on the right and 67% said Giggs would get on. The vast majority of younger fans thought Vidic was the greatest defender ever to play for the club (41%) and Rio Ferndinand came second at 13%.
